CEBU CITY (March 19, 2024)Mayor Mike Rama intends to meet with the legislators and local finance committee to discuss the general revision of the real property tax (RPT) code.

He will do once he returns from his business trip in Taiwan.

“I wish they will find time that once I come back, we will have a bilateral discussion,” Rama said in Ingna’ng Mayor over Sugboanon Channel today.

He believes the opposition so far expressed against his proposal, as Councilor Nestor Archival did, is only borne from the lack of understanding and appreciation of his strategy.

While the law will be updated for real property taxes to reflect the actual current fair market values, he proposed its implementation will be on staggered basis and with consideration to those with difficulty in paying.

The staggered implementation will be defined in the updated law’s implementing rules and regulations that both the executive and the legislative will agree on, he pointed out.

Rama has pushed for the general revision of the city’s RPT Code after he ascended as Mayor by 2022, adding it was updated in 2003, or 21 years ago.

The mayor intends to raise funds from property taxes for major and urgent projects and programs of the city.

These are those meant to address traffic, flooding and resettlement of those in the aspiring sector, with priority to those affected by the clearing of the city’s river easements to prevent the loss of lives. | PPRMN / jkv
