CEBU CITY (Jan. 5, 2024) – The city’s traffic authority urges motorcycle drivers to always be cautious when driving.

Corazon Yrog-irog, the head of the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO)’s Traffic Education Section, said her office recorded an increase in motorcycle accidents from January 2022 until July last year.

Yrog-irog said CCTO recorded around 1,705 motorcycle accidents from January to December 2022.

From January to July of the following year, around 1,588 motorcycle accidents were recorded, she added.

“For the first six months of 2023, hapit naapsan ang record sa 2022,” Yrog-irog said during CCTO’s Traffic Hour teleradyo program over Sugboanon Channel on Thursday, Jan. 4.

Yrog-irog said the number of motorcycle accidents is based on CCTO’s monitoring.

She admitted that CCTO did not have verification over the number of fatalities from motorcycle accidents from August to December last year due to recording changes.

Sa 2023, wala na nato ma verify kung pila ang homicide ani, tungod kay ang recording nato ani sa PNP (Philippine National Police) kay by station na. So wala na nabutang sa remarks,” Yrog-irog added.

Clear intersections

Manuel Tagaan, CCTO Special Task Action Section head, urged motorcycle drivers to clear the intersection first before going through.

He said most road accidents that CCTO recorded often occur at an intersection.

“Before ka mosud (sa intersection), observe gyud ka both sides. Bisa’g go signal, ayaw pagsalig nga go na kay naa gyu’y molabang sa pikas. Di kakasiguro sa huna-huna sa pikas side,” Tagaan said.

“So ang atong buhaton basta intersection, mo menor gyud ta aron sa pag-iwas sa disgrasya,” he added.

Bautista added that drivers should also be cautious and be well-verse when it comes to road rules to avoid accidents.

“As a defensive driver, kung ikaw lisensyado o’ wala kay lisensya, agi gyud ka sa saktong seminar aron sa paglikay sa aksidente,” he added. | PPRMN / kac
